What is Ivermectin (Stromectol)?

Sold under the brand name of Stromectol, Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication popular among both animals and humans. it is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used in the treatment of several infections. How does Ivermectin work?

It is believed to stun or kill the parasites by enabling the excessive release of neurotransmitters in the peripheral nervous system of the parasites. It works by paralyzing the parasitic gut so as to render them useless and kill their larvae, after which they are effectively removed from the body. It is said to bind to the proteins secreted by the young worms to block the host’s immune system so that once the immune system is back on track, the white blood cells can kill the worms. It also slows down the rate at which the adult worms reproduce to decrease their symptomatic effect on the body.

The dose is advised to be taken in the morning time an hour or so before breakfast. Usually, the dose is repeated once every 6-12 months, depending on the severity of the infection and the practitioner’s treatment plan. In people with Onchocerciasis or river blindness, a corticosteroid is advised along with Ivermectin to reduce the inflammation caused by the death of the worms. For cases of river blindness, the dose is 150mcg per kg in adults and teens, and children weighing more than 15kgs. Likewise, for Strongyloidiasis, the dose is 200mcg per kg in adults, teens, and children more than 15 kg. For children less than 15 kg, the practitioner determines the doses for river blindness and Strongyloidiasis.
